BC – One Year Later

by Miles Benson

BC Seal, with DC Comics One Year Later symbol attached
Well it’s been one year since I’ve been working at Boston College.

It’s been the best working experience I can remember since I worked at Express and Cafe Espresso. It’s taken some time getting used to working full-time, and I wouldn’t ever say I would ever TRULY get used to those hours, but it helps that they give me some of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had.

I figured I’d show some off some of the work that’s kept me busy for the past year:

(Some of the links will open using Shadowbox© other links will open in a new tab or window. I apologize for the inconvenience of confusion but there’s a reason for it.)

This is my main responsibility, @BC.

@BC is a website for alumni and current students of Boston College to see what’s going on…well, at BC. It gets updated once a month with new story’s and features. I primarily have to build the multimedia that is used as an addition to the great writing throughout the site. Some of the noteworthy and prime examples of my work and team collaboration are listed below.

  • Beyond “For Boston,” This is a print and audio edition of school songs from a Boston College.
  • Portfolio, a monthly selection of photographs taken by the photographers at BC
  • Caught in the act, an audio slideshow from @BC showing scenes from the student stage production “Ashley’s Purpose.”
  • Campus tour [Real Media video], a video from @BC that follows historian James O’Toole who talks about the history and lore of the 64-acre property in Brighton that Boston College has purchased from the archdiocese.
  • Yes, a video from @BC that shows the University hosting Boston’s first in-depth Bloomsday bash with readings, music, film, theater, and a panel discusion on Boston’s Irish and Jews.

I update the Boston College Homepage once a week.

I occasionally work on Boston College Magazine.

  • Time and again, slideshow of graduates then and now.
  • Big picture, an interactive map showing the Brighton property bought by Boston College that was owned for nearly a century by the Boston Archdiocese.

Below are projects that are either in beta or have been canceled. Not sure I can publicly display them, but I’m going to anyway. If anyone has a problem with this, email me, and I will gladly take them down.

This is my project I have taken under my wing. I hope it will take off when I have a little time to work on it. It’s an interactive map for BC.

This is an idea we just started with and developing the technology for. It’s a gallery for all the weekly featured photos we display on @BC.

Another idea we just started and starting developing the technology for is an email generator. I’m only working on the interface for the CMS, but still I like the way it’s coming out.

Also, we take our parties pretty seriously at BC.

This job is truly an otherworldly experience. This is how all businesses should be run. It’s hard for me to imagine what my life would be like without this opportunity to work here. I owe Boston College and the people I work with so much. I am in their debt.

You are free, you have a voice, you do not have to sneak...
So, for god's sake...speak!
