L ate to the party with this one guys, I apologize. But Apples in Stereo came to Boston a few weeks back and I went! It was a great show, they played with The Generationals and some other band I don’t remember.

I actually only have one song by Apples in Stereo and that’s the one I’m featuring here today, I planned on buying and or downloading more songs by them after the show that I liked during their performance but I haven’t gotten around to it.

These guys are excellent showmen. It took them a little while to get on stage after The Generationals but, once they did you realize it was all worth it. They came out in these platinum space-age-esque jumpsuits…

The lyrics:

I wanna feel that,
I wanna feel that, that my future’s still comin’.
I walk into the night, and from the city lights,
But my mind is still runnin’.
I could see your face again,
I could see my old friends, in my sweet imagination. (sweet imagination)
I walk into the street, and from the city beat,
But my mind is still racin’.

The dance floor isn’t there no more,
But my body’s still movin’.
Tell me, do you know,
Where are we to go, when our world is so confusing?

Ooh, I wanna go there,
Temptations fill the air in my sweet recollection. (sweet recollection)
Ooh, I see a “For Sale” sign,
Where we made up our minds to be more than just good friends.

The dance floor isn’t there no more,
But my body’s still movin’. (my body’s still movin’)
Tell me, do you know,
Where are we to go, when our world is so confusing? (my world is so confusing)

You know the dance floor isn’t there no more,
But my body’s still movin’. (my body’s still movin’)
Tell me, do you know,
Where are we to go, when our world is so confusing? (my world is so confusing)

You know the dance floor (dance floor, dance floor)
Isn’t there no more. (there no more, there no more)
You know the dance floor (dance floor, dance floor)
Isn’t there no more. (there no more, there no more)

When our world is so confusing… [8x]

I walk into the night, and from the city lights,
But my mind is still runnin’. (mind is still runnin’)
I wanna feel that,
I wanna feel that, that my future’s still comin’.

The dance floor isn’t there no more,
But my body’s still movin’. (my body’s still movin’)
Where are we to go, when our world is so confusing? (my world is so confusing)

But my body’s still movin’. (my body’s still movin’)
Tell me, do you know,
Where are we to go, when our world is so confusing? (my world is so confusing)

You know, the dance floor (dance floor, dance floor)
You know, the dance floor (dance floor, dance floor)
Isn’t there no more. (there no more, there no more)

You know, the dance floor,
‘Cause they’re in trouble,
Isn’t there no more. (there no more, there no more)

You know, the dance floor,
They’re in trouble,
Isn’t there no more.

Fun fact:

Also, awesomely bearded frontman Robert Schneider is a math whiz whose love for numbers and music theory resulted in his creation of something called the Non-Pythagorean scale. If I actually understood this I think I’d be a happier person but all I can do in the meantime is learn how to long divide first and stand in awe over the man’s brilliance.

A post about my modern day inspiration as well as probably the most insightful thing I've ever written about myself

Bronques is my modern day inspiration.

Merlin is a creature of the nightlife, partying hard and photographing partygoers for his site Last Night’s Party. More often than not an R-rated photographic chronicle of the downtown demimonde that has become as desirable a showcase for club kids as the pages of W magazine are to Park Avenue socialites.

Despite the heat from the critics, the site’s popularity shows no signs of waning. In fact, the fun-at-all-costs message seems to be spreading. While a life of seven-nights-a-week clubbing might wear on some people, Bronques seems to thrive on it.

“You know that song by Arcade Fire that goes ‘Sleeping is giving in’? That’s my anthem.”

Combining the best of glamorous pinup photography with a lush, urban aesthetic, and his photos capture the vibrancy of New York life and its most lusty citizens. His passion for his craft is clear in the way he describes his work and his nonstop clicking. When not walking the city streets hoping for a glimpse of his next top model. He finds them anywhere and everywhere, and believes, “With a complete stranger you can explore sides of yourself that you never could with family, friends and even your significant other.”

The photoblogging phenomenon has helped convince regular people they are amazing enough to get their photo taken. Merlin and Mark Hunter of thecobrasnake.com. Coupled with the digital-photography boom and the prevalence of photobloggers, a paparazzi-type feel has erupted at every nightclub—places where not too long ago, anyone, famous or not, could let loose anonymously. Now people don’t just want you to take their photos, they expect it. Nightclubs are their red carpet, the (insert club name) and (insert club name) are their movie premieres, and lastnightsparty.com and thecobrasnake.com are their Us Weekly and Star magazines.

And actually, I have a confession to make that just became clear after that last paragraph. I hate, I mean hate with a passion that burns with the power of a thousand suns, reality T.V. Any form of it. I’m talking everything from the Hills to Cops. And even though shows like Man vs. Wild, the Girls next door, and Dirty Jobs have all at times captured my attention and heart, I am sickened by that form of “entertainment.” But the concept of reality T.V. isn’t that far off from what club photographing is all about. Making the average and most of the time not-so-average person a celebrity by a single photo. And I have to admit, as a person who’s struggled his whole life knowing that the odds of being a true celebrity are slim to none…it makes me feel a little warm inside feeling as though I’m handsome enough, fashionable enough, dare I say even funny enough to have my photo taken and posted online in a very tabloid-esque manner.

“The first time I ever took pictures at Happy Ending, there were no other photographers there,” Bronques says. “People asked, ‘Why would you want to take pictures here? There are no celebrities here.’ But I love blurring the line between celebrity and the kids. A lot of the kids I photograph are as cool as any celebrity that I photograph.”

Bronques sees party photographers as an addition to the nightlife experience: “You have a cool DJ that plays good music, go-go dancers that hype the atmosphere, a host that makes it look cool, and a photographer who adds that sense of glamour to it. It helps a party.” You can trace that idea to Studio 54—all of us are in some way paying homage to the documentation of that glitzy era. But back then, nightclub photography wasn’t so commonplace. It meant something to get your picture taken.

Up here in Boston, the club photographer who is extremely well known throughout the indie hipster scene is David Day, who takes photos for the site, Nicky Digital. He’s snapped my photo a bunch of times. Most notably these gems:

In the indie-verse the most ‘popular’ club photographers are: Merlin Bronques, MisShapes, The Cobra Snake, and Nicky Digital (if you don’t know these names, you’re either over 35 years old or need to seriously re-read your Hipster Handbook).

You might say I’m a little obsessed with sex and the exploitation thereof. Things that ooze and drip sex I love. So, what Merlin shoots is like art to me. It is art in fact. And the thing is, it’s not even just the sexual photos, it’s the photos he takes of gallivanting around the world. Shots of being on a plane or in a cab going somewhere. Walking down the street and taking amazing photos of that cities current newspaper. It’s all completely random but, it all tells a story. It’s his life in photographs.

I’m sure there have been hundreds of other artists/photographers who have done this very thing. But, he continues to capture my eyes, brain, and heart with every thing he shoots so I had to write about him and his work because I am in awe on a weekly basis and that awe cannot go not talked about.

Since it would seem most of my friends and people I know who read this blog, tend to a) dislike the sex-ploitation of women b) dislike hipsters and c) don’t like reading my reviews (based on Google Analytics) I’ll assume none of my friends have read anything past the first paragraph so I won’t even warn them that the visual content they skipped to is most definitely NSFW.

Not only does he snap photos but he makes short videos and writes even shorter stories. Both of which are almost better than the photo he takes. Here are some of my favorite pieces of work done by him (video, word, and photos):

These movies are probably the two greatest pieces of video that have ever been shot, and I mean that.

Here’s two of my favorite things he’s written:

You call me into your meetings and you have so many new ideas. You’re going to put New York City back on the map. You’re going to put the “life” back into “nightlife”. Hey, have you met my friend Michelle? She just moved here. She’s 18 years old and she makes her own outfits. She’s friends with all the drag queens that hang out at The Box and she gets table comps at Avenue and the Boom Boom Room. They love her at Rose Bar. She missed everything. The Beatrice days, the Misshapes days, the Ruff Club days, the Motherfucker days, the We Bite days and the Happy Valley days. She doesn’t care. She’ll go see Frog at Happy Ending because he makes her laugh and he always plays the Beatles. Opening Ceremony wants her to be a brand ambassador. She hardly wears any make-up. They say she looks like early Kate Moss but they don’t know what to do with those big boobs on her little frame. She gets in everywhere. When she goes to Brooklyn, she goes there to dance. She discovered BK when Hiro Ballroom almost killed the scene and before Webster came back to try to save it. She was just visiting back then, and all her friends wanted to go to Marquee because Time Out Magazine said it was a hot, but she followed a photographer to a warehouse party across the river. They took the L train on a night where it was actually working and they saw Thelophius London for the first time. Will she come to your parties when you start saving New York? Probably not, because she’s moving to LA.

People come in and out of the scene like seasons. When we haven’t seen someone in a while, we know that we’ve probably lost them to an overdose… or a relationship. When these new relationships start, it’s always with the best intentions that nothing will change. But slowly and gradually it happens. The new couple starts to leave the parties earlier and earlier until eventually they start hosting dinners at home instead. People bring wine and they talk about their little projects. Like the one’s they’re developing together, a catering business or a clothing store or a fashion line and they talk about how they’ve started going to the gym and they’re doing cardio and that they have an awesome personal trainer with a Russian name. They’re being more “productive”. They’re “growing up”. Eventually, there are less dinners, or rather, the kids “not-in-relationships” get invited less and less and the lovely couple suddenly disappears. Off the radar, just like that, and the party people stop trying to call, and everybody’s life just goes on.

And it’s always when we least expect it, you know, when we’ve finally found peace with our new dancing partners for “Lust For Life” and Arcade Fire and when we have new people to do Patron shots with, that one of them re-appears again with a brand new haircut and some cute clothes telling us and everyone else how they really lost themselves in that last relationship. It was good, they don’t regret it, but New York City isn’t made for settling down. They can’t wait to re-connect with themselves and their old friends again. But, you know, it’s never as comfortable as the last time around. There’s too many new faces. The party names have changed, the DJs are “mixing harder”, and after the over-emotional, over-compensating hugs that last as if we were Vietnam vets reunited, they realize that they have changed too and that they have nothing in common with the new regime.

Here is a very small group of photos I’ve collected from his site that I think are wonderful. RSS readers, please go to actual post:

Three years at Boston College…and going strong!

Boston College–One Year later

Boston College–Year two

One year later and Year two were rough years, and not because of work, but because of what was going on outside of work. Well, year three smoothed things out. Year three has been a great year. Both at work and outside. And even though I’ve posted things recently that would lead you to believe otherwise, just know that BC and my new living situation are the primary things in my life that are keeping me going strong.

Here are some of the projects that have been keeping me busy:
If you are using an RSS reader, please go to the actual post.

The homepage is still one of my main responsibilities. Haven’t got around to adding some javascript animation like I wanted to for the featured highlights and events yet, but, that’s only because we were switching over the BC CMS so I had to wait to see what was going to be possible within it:

The bulk of my work this past year has been making features and creating technology to showcase those features. Here are the one’s I’m particularly proud of from this past year:
We revamped the look and feel of Portfolio:

Last year there was an audio slideshow that I was working on that I am SUPER proud of. That came out AWESOME, called Here’s looking at me:

Another audio slideshow that I did that came out really good was one called Welcome wagon:

I found and started utilizing this new slideshow technology called Highslide:

We even started doing interactive features, which has been great for me because it means the video/audio people step aside and I can actually utilize my expertise:

Even though I didn’t shoot this piece, I thought I should mention that the storyboarding and concept was my idea that I proposed:

This in an interesting feature I did of a tour of the University’s main data center:

At the beginning of the year the Carrol school of management wanted some interesting new pieces of technology that we had to build and create content for. We created an accordion style Javascript feature to house audio slideshows that I created:

Not everything I do is technology/code/content driven. I actually get to digitally illustrate some artwork for various pieces we’ve done:

Not everything I do for the University I can actually highlight here using images.

There is a lot more that I do that I shouldn’t talk about as of yet. Only because a lot of thing are in testing, approval, and somewhat hush hush that I don’t think my higher ups would approve of me posting.

Stay tuned to Year four…all will be revealed.

And as always, I owe a GIANT thank you to my employers and the College for this amazing opportunity to let me be a part of something bigger than myself. <3

Like seasons, people come in and out of the 'scene.' Where they go, we'll never know.

Like seasons, people come in and out of the ’scene.’ Where they go, we’ll never know. Relationships? Jobs? Drugs? Travel? Moving? Death? All we know is that we’ve lost them. These people when we first met them, the relationship always started with the best intentions. But as time passes, people, especially couples, begin to leave the parties earlier and earlier. And at some point you’ll get the evite, for a dinner party hosted at their home instead; where most assuredly will end around midnight. People will bring wine and casserole dishes and talk about the little projects filling the empty void where they feel their youth once was. These friends will talk about starting businesses together and beginning projects together like t-shirt companies, books, websites, blogs, radio shows, catering companies, bakeries, etc…that will usually go no where. They talk about going to the gym more and doing yoga and palates. All the talk will be surrounded by seriousness, with the intention of hoping to ‘grow up’ and be more productive than they have been. Then eventually there’s no more dinner party’s. No more invites, the people not in relationships, the people without common interests with those who are, the people who are not “in-sync with the expected attitude for your age” stop getting phone calls, and the party people not in relationships, not hosting dinner parties, and not “in-sync with the expected attitude for their age” stop trying to call those who are. And, everybody’s life just goes on…

And, it’s always when we least expect it, when we’ve finally found peace with our new dancing partners for “Lust For Life,” Arcade Fire, Pet Shop Boys, and “Just Dance” and when we have new people to do Patron or Jager shots with, that one of them re-appears again with a brand new haircut and some new style of dress telling us and everyone else how they really lost themselves in that last relationship, project or year. It was good, they don’t regret it, but the city isn’t made for settling down. They can’t wait to re-connect with themselves and their old friends again. But, you know as well as I, it’s never as comfortable as the last time around. There’s too many new faces. The party names have changed, the DJs are mixing unfamiliar tunes, and after the over-emotional, over-compensating hugs that last as if we were veterans from a great war reunited, they realize that they have changed too and that they have nothing in common with the new regime.

Just because they can’t handle it anymore, doesn’t mean we’re going to stop fighting…the only reason it’s never as comfortable as before is because you let it be uncomfortable.

...means to go home alone with nothing but your right hand.

I’ve kind of always known why I don’t meet anyone. But it wasn’t until last Friday that I actually saw it in action. Laid out in front of me what I’m doing wrong.

I went to River Gods in Cambridge, which by the way, has an amazing vegan/vegetarian menu. I met up with a couple of friends of mine. And I was just supposed to meet up with them for a couple hours for food then drinks and then call it a night. However, we ended up having a great time dancing and talking so we stayed out late. In the midst of all this, a science experiment. Where I was supposed to play the role of the rat. However, instead, I played the role of the observer.

The reason for the science experiment was that at one point during the night a guy sat down next to us by himself and he sat there just having a drink. And I asked the two females I was with how they felt about a guy going to a bar or club by themselves and whether or not that’s a turn-off. They said no, they said it shows confidence. It shows that you’re confidant enough to go to a bar by yourself and confidant enough in your own body and mind. To which my reply was, “you girls are peanut butter bat shit crazy.”

Well, at the end of the night I ended up eating those words.

The lone man, was greeted by a friend that he was apparently meeting there; we’ll call him Chicken thick glasses. The lone man and Chicken thick glasses sat at the bar together by themselves speaking to no one else but each other. While they sat, me and the two female friends were talking about confidence, what it would take to get confidence, and whether or not if that’s even possible. Not long after Chicken thick glasses joined the party two very attractive women entered the bar and came up and ordered a drink. The women I was with then pursued to egg me on trying to get me to talk to them. I was resisting with all the power of the lion of Olympus because I feel like a douche bag when forcing conversation onto strangers. I hate it when certain kinds of people do it to me so I don’t want to become one of those people. So instead I watched as the lone man and Chicken fucking thick glasses suddenly became fucking the Chazz Reinhold (Wedding Crashers) of River Gods!

I shat myself twice and actually came a little too. It was like reading a fucking comic book. Peter Parker and his friend Clark Kent over here swoop in and nail the two hottest girls at the bar! What the shit is that?

I’ve spent an absurd amount of time on this Earth reading comic books, watching movies, and absorbing “fiction.” And a recurring theme throughout fiction is that the nerdy, socially awkward, geekiest, losery, Chicken thick glassesiest always wind up with the hott girl with a great personality. And the primary reason I continue to read this kind of genre is because it gives me hope that especially after witnessing what happened last night that the same can happen for me.

Now, for the crux…In fiction it depicts nerdy socially awkward people find and “get” great women without ever making the first move. Instances and occurrences such as the one I witnessed last night and other many times make feel that cannot be a reality.

However, instances and occurrences I have witnessed over time where nerdy socially awkward people find and do “get” great women without ever making the first move lead me to, well…believe in fiction.

So suffice to say I went home drunk and with nothing but my right hand. No phone numbers. No Facebook addresses. Nothing.

Well where ever you are lone man and Chicken fucking thick glasses, I hope nothing but the best for you regardless of my negative tones and harsh words. Ultimately, I’m just jealous. For your ability to turn my fantasy into a reality.

Ultimately, it depends what you want out of life...however, there's things to consider

Ultimately, it depends what you want out of life.

Do you want a yard, lots of closets, and the treasures of a city less than an hour’s drive away when you get bored? Or do you want hundreds of restaurants, bars, and galleries filled with the most fascinating people on earth and the entire social/intellectual/artistic/professional landscape of the city at your doorstep? Do you want to live where new coffee shops get people excited, or in a center of change where the future is being reinvented? Do you want to be part of the action, or watch it from the suburbs on TV? Do you want to live in a place that’s only of interest to the people who live there, or in a city that thousands possibly millions around the world care about? City living is for people who want to play on a big stage, and for those of us who care about that, there’s nowhere else.

If that doesn’t concern you, I agree you’re better off saving your money.

I grabbed and modified that post for NINTR from peterfeld because I just got back from New York City for the weekend and it really makes me realize that even though I moved closer to Boston, finally, New York City trumps Boston in almost every way imaginable. However, since I am a Boston bred boy, I do love me some dirty water. It is very hard for me to imagine living anywhere else…but I guess the only question on my mind now that I’m back is how does Boston get away with calling itself a city?

Read about my last time in New York, here. And it’s impact, here.

Hello fellow Now is not the Rhyme readers. Sorry I haven’t posted anything new in a while.

It’s because…

I’m moving to the city!

Hopefully for good. But, given what happened the last time, I don’t have much faith that it will last. (I partially almost wish my parents would get raging pissed and kick me out for good, so I feel like I won’t have something to fall back to).

I will return to my regularly scheduled posting hopefully very soon.

Until then read some posts from the short time I DID live in the city:

They show us that their lyrics or song by themselves wouldn't make a lick of sense if weren't for the way they utilize their friendship to maximize their harmony.

Bishop Allen is an American indie rock band from Boston. Being a Boston native myself, I like that they got the name for their band from Bishop Allen Drive in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where the two band members lived together after attending Harvard University.

I would have to say they have sounds that remind me of Los Campesinos! with a little bit of folk vibe. Apparently, according to the band’s website, the band has literary influences for their music, one of the more noteworthy ones would be G.K. Chesterton who wrote one of my favorites books, The man who was Thursday.

I’m really amazed at how the lyrics by themselves seem to be so queer and strange to be put to a melody but they do it so perfectly and meaningful. Like the two wouldn’t make sense apart from one another. That these two things need to be together in order to be understood. Maybe, that’s why these band members continue to harmonize together as well…

Please enjoy.

Like castanets

The lyrics:

This city is silver in the moon
And mountains heaped with sugar spoons
The click and clatter of my feet
On lonely crooked cobbled streets
Like castanets

Down past the window shutter tie
The hollow of a haunted night
It’s raining now out on the beach
The chit and chatter of my teeth
Like Castanets

I’m following the coffee trail
And drink it black and by the bail
The pesos turn to paper cups
My fingers tremble at the touch
Like castanets

Santa Lucia
…Bella vista

San Cristobal

La Moneda

And on the cable car I climb
Up to the sacred virgin shrine
This city’s smothered in the smog
The snippy snap of wild dogs
Like Castanets

Tomorrow is Assumption Day
I ask them what they celebrate
Daniello says he can’t explain
But he’ll be clappin’ anyway
Like Castanets

Ohh…Like Castanets

The Monitor

The lyrics:

Once a great ironworks
Stood at the end of my street
And they hauled in The Monitor
Fit her with armor
For to save the union fleet

The River James was on fire
As The Merrimack thundered and raged
And she seemed so colossal and so unstoppable
Until the two engaged
And inside the sound
A deafening din, round after round, again and again
Shattering down, shattering down, shattering down

The neighborhood’s quiet at night
But sometimes my ears still ring
And you think I’d understand
That a rock-n-roll band
Doesn’t mean a blessed thing
But I picture the poor crew stunned
When the cannons did finally subside
How they stand on the deck
With the sun at their neck
And they wonder if they’re still alive
And I try to shout
But none of them hear
They’re moving their mouths
But the blood in their ears
Is running down, running down, running down

And we’re singing la da da da da da
And we’re singing la da da da da da
And we’re singing la da da da da da
But what then?

It’s stunning to know I’ve survived
But I’m not sure what I’m fighting for anymore
And when I break another string
And continue to sing
Is that courage? I’m not sure.
When the ironclads drifted apart
Still blue and still gray
The men shoveled in the coal
And worked the pumps in the hull
Just like every other day
And none of them knew
Oh, none of them cared
How much it just changed right then and right there
They just carried on, carried on, carried on

And we’re singing la da da da da da
And we’re singing la da da da da da
And we’re singing la da da da da da
But what then?

And we’re singing la da da da da da
And we’re singing la da da da da da
And we’re singing la da da da da da
But what then?

These two nights: Jun 30th, 2007, Oct 20th, 2007,

Graduating College

Parking at the Redline Alewife station and making out with a girl while the windows steamed up lying there with our clothes off staring at the moon…as the night continued we drove around with her head in my lap, asleep, listening to The Red House Painters.

The ironic events from Catharsis Island

Jonah Matranga’s intimate doorway performance in Providence after a HUGE show at Lupo’s heartbreak hotel.

The day I started using Certain Dri

My best friend introducing me to CrimethInc and veganism.

The day I decided that I wanted to revolutionize digital comics online. Which led to a career in web design which led to a good probability of job security for a long time.

Having my best friend help me with the same secret from list item #3.

This day with this girl.

Rekindling my friendship with my best friend after a four year hiatus.

Any moment with my high school design teacher. Specifically the one’s where she sat me down and helped me figure out my future in design; my parents thanking her for steering me in the right direction; and also on graduation day her giving me a pendent with a symbol that means “Initiation,” which in my later years would come to find out that word resonates in every waking moment of my life.

The day I was born. (Seemed weird to put it as a top 3 and I didn’t want to put it in the double digits and not consider myself important). Just because I don’t remember taking my first breath, doesn’t mean it can’t be a great moment…

Moving out of my parents house for the first time.

Kissing “the most popular girl in school,” during a junior year play in front of my graduating class

After taking my final exam for my last college course, my professor, after an entire year of telling me that he thought my philosophies were spot on and my writing superb, put his hand on my shoulder and said “take it to the streets…”

Having a Paris Hilton lookalike ask ME out

Sharing a secret and having an amazing experience with this girl

My New York trip in 2008 with two friends of mine

Getting the job at Boston College

Isn’t funny how most of the things I feel have been the greatest have happened in the past 10 years?

Missed the cut:

My trip to Maui with a friend of mine. (I am leaving June 3rd, I do not want to Jinx it by saying it was a great moment when I don’t know for sure yet; however, I do know that it will be fun but whether it will be top 20 material, we will see.)

Meeting the creators of the Ninja Turtles

Getting the balls to talk to the attractive brunette from Café Espresso

Meeting Blake Hazard from the Submarines

Mirage Studios deciding they were going to finish the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures series (one of my favorite books of all time), after it was canceled unexpectedly, for the Turtles 25th anniversary.

My “send-off” from two friends of mine on my last day at Café Espresso

The support system weeks

On a final note: If there is a moment I spent with you that is not listed on here, please don’t feel offended…
